1. Determine if the ground is shaking and if there is an earthquake.
2. Do not panic. 3. Drop to the ground. 4. When you are indoors, take cover by going under a sturdy table. 5. If there is no table near you, drop to the ground in an inside corner of the room and cover your neck and head using your hands and arms. 6. If in bed, remain where you are and cover your head with a pillow, moving may cause more injuries. 7. When you are outdoors, immediately go to an open space such as a field or an open air parking lot. Opt to walk rather than drive. 8. If driving a car, stop, park the car on the side of the road, and stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops. Avoid bridges, power lines, and other hazards. 9. If you’re by the shore, drop, cover and hold on until the shaking ceases. If the shaking lasts for 20 seconds or more, a tsunami might be underway due to the earthquake. Immediately evacuate to higher ground that is 30 meters above sea level or 3 kilometers away from the shore. 10. Hold on to your protection until the shaking stops. Moving will only expose you to danger due to falling debris and broken glasses. |
